A painting of the Howard Homestead on Howard Road, painted by Amelle B. Hand of Newton Rd. Littleton, MA. The painting is of the house and barn in the winter with snow on the driveway, no leaves on the trees, and a grey sky. (21" x 17" including brown wooden frame) (20" x 16" without frame) The Howard house was built before 1853, the homestead included 105 acres, east of Howard Road to Rte 110. The house came down in early 1960. The barn burned in 1967, the snow kept fire fighters from getting to the barn. Calvin Howard (1792-1883) built the house, his son Calvin L (1846-1926) and wife Mary Jennie (Hale) Howard raised their five children there between 1873-1886. Their youngest child Alice Mabel (b. 1886) graduated from Simmon College with a librarian degree. She returned to assist her brother John with the farm. She had an egg route in No. Chelmsford and also assisted at the J V Fletcher Library. |
